How Much To Repair A Frieghtline Bent Drivline
-
I experienced this final yr on a new 379 with only 25,000 (yes, 25k!) rental.
Running across desert, grossed at 64k, started feeling a vibration, like running the rumble strip. I was near rest expanse, pulled in, chexked tires, air numberless, suspension, engine for leaks, broken ??? All was still shiny and pretty. So off I go, vibration would vary depending on speed...I knew something was not right, chosen dealer support, repeat story, documented...I was about 100 miles from calendar week long stop.
Now going up a few 5% grades...running about 55mph, jamming to the Bee Gees...Nail!
WTF!!!! RPM'S go to No No state, truck is shaking and I look in my passenger mirror to run across parts bouncing off into the desert!
The commuter next to me gets in CB and says....Dude, that was AWESOME! Never seen fireworks Nether a truck!!! (smart #####* drivers are everywhere!!!)
Fast forward 5 days later, towed 100 miles to closest dealer, broken short shaft!!!
Final damage around 25k. Broken hanger, blown air bag, broken teeth on front diff, rear diff, damage in tranny, and replace short shaft immediate components.
The crusade???? NOBODY ever greased the u-joints!!!
So at present you know the ounce of prevention root!!!
Fast forward a week ago, coming out of SLC eastward thru them hills, o/o local handling the curves likehad been there before. Fadt downhill, but no ability up...pass, blow my doors off, close to dust, getting greasy out, went to pass him (again for the x fourth dimension) and observe sparks lighting up his catwalk. I slowed down, got on radio, (no responce, off, Bee Gees on radio????)
BOOM!!! I knew what it was, poor guy probably filled his pants!!! I wish I could take stopped, but the shoulder looked likewise greasy...
Lamentable for the long story, simply moral of the story??
CB on and have your mechanic grease them joints!

I retrieve in the late xc's. We got some new sterlings with greaseless U-joints, no fittings at all. They didn't final too long, luckily drivers or mechanics caught them before 1 threw out. Information technology wasn't long before they all got replaced with ones with grease fittings. Then around 2005 or so we got new Volvo's. The shaft betwixt the rears didn't have a grease fitting for the slip yoke, there was a plug in the hole. Volvo said that they were pre-lubed and did not need maintenance, if we remove the plug warranty volition exist voided. After 150,000 miles we stated dropping shafts. After several warranty replacements (of the same type), and several on the same trucks, Volvo started replacing them with ones that had grease fittings.

Enviromentalist dont similar us using grease so alot of articles go to these greaseless points. Alot of trucks dont have the greaserts on the the front shackles anymore and bushings go pinched causing a poping dissonance in the frontends . They need to go find a tree to hug stay out of trucking my opinion
RoadRanger^^ and Ooops Thank this. -
Nosotros had shimmy issues and poor tire habiliment on Sterlings that came with those greaseless shackle bushings. After over a year of BS, Sterling blaming Goodyear, Goodyear analyzing tires, many visits from both, they finally came out with a kit to supercede the safety bushings with bronze bushings and grease fittings, problem solved.
I intendance about the environment when it makes sense, I recycle, shut lights off when not in use and another things. All these new parts that neglect are built in a factories that put out emissions. As much every bit the new engines suspension down, I wonder if anyone takes that into account. All the EGR valves, EGR coolers, intake throttle valves, etc. that we change quite regularly. I wonder how much pollution the factories that brand all these replacement parts put out.

driveshafts coming loose can end upwards ruining your 24-hour interval, fifty-fifty worse for anyone else that may get hit past the flight projectile

i grease my ain truck in between services so even if the store misses ane or two zerks it still gets greased

Another thing to think about, Is if y'all ever have your truck front towed and they remove the driveshaft, Or if you accept whatsoever clutch or tranny work done and they remove the driveshaft, Those metal straps that are merely held on by two bolts each, take to be replaced. So check to make sure they are NEW before leaving the mechanic store as many shops like to cut corners/lazy to replace them. That being said, the tow truck operator who may have reinstalled them might accept done it improperly over/under torked the bolts.. This is why the Heavy tow company doesnt reinstall driveshafts (We SOMETIMES will axles), so that nosotros arent liable when two weeks after the install, if the truck loses the driveshaft during the beginning of heavy traffic and 7 cars hit information technology taking them out (I used to work on a major highway under contract with the MTO or DOT equally the U.s.a. calls them) and have seen information technology happen... Just something to think about.

This is so truthful, every bit I have seen it many times during my "Towing life" (34 years now)... I take left the drivelines out of 99% of everything that I had towed from the front, and the only ones I reinstalled where when I had a new kit (straps and bolts) to put in.
Cut corners is very common in repair shops and if some problem happens after, information technology always seems to be "Identify BLAME ON THE Belfry"I love the line item on the repair orders "REINSTALL DRIVELINE"...
Every bit a side notation, the force that drivelines take when they come up out is real powerful. I picked up a Volvo tractor which fabricated information technology from the Houston area to the Florida Panhandle a few years ago. If you lot exercise non believe that there is ability in there, I have pictures which show a "BENT FRAME" and the "Cross Fellow member" to a higher place the front rear broke - peeled open!!!!
